We are the proud designers of the the original wood ruler growth chart, which has become more popular that we ever imagined.  We have inspired designers at Pottery Bar, Hobby Lobby and hundreds of others, however we still off the highest quality growth chart kit to help you create an amazing growth chart of your own.

Instructions for prepping the wood for the Ruler Growth Chart

You will need :

One 1 x 8 x 6 pine board (1inch thick x 8 inches wide x 6 feet long)
The board is called a 1x8 but the actual size is really about 3/4 of an inch thick and 7 1/2 inches wide. The length should still be 6 feet long. Most home improvement stores carry this size in stock so there is no cutting involved.

To finish the board:
The edges can be sanded until smooth. The board can then be painted with a good interior paint or stain and allowed to dry for 2-4 days before applying the decal. The board can also be finished with an oil such as Boiled Linseed Oil. This will give it a finish while leaving the natural look of the wood. Follow the directions on the can and use it sparingly . Paint it on and then wipe off the excess. This process will need to dry for 6-8 days before applying the decal.

Instructions for applying the Ruler Growth Chart Decal

Before you begin, trim the edge of the decal, near the marks so that you can line it up with the edge of your wood. If applying to a wall, draw level marks to align the decal with.

Without removing the backing, center and align the whole decal on the board or surface. Tape the entire decal, including the backing, into place with masking tape.  If you are planning on hanging it a few inches above the floor start the decal at that point and go up from there. (ie. If you are hanging the chart 12 inches off the floor start the decal at 1 foot and on a six foot board the decal will reach 7 feet)

With everything else taped down, pull up about 12 inches on the bottom and pull away from the backing. With scissors, cut away this section of the backing and gently stick the decal back down to the application surface.

Now that this section is secure, remove the masking tape you applied to hold the decal in place and lift the unattached portion of the decal up. Continue to remove the backing in small sections and carefully press the decal into place. Be sure that the rest of the markings are staying aligned with the edge of the board or with the marks on the wall. Be careful not to leave any of the lettering on the backing.

When all the vinyl is in place press on all the pieces to be sure they will stick -you may want to use a stiff card- and then remove the top masking. Once again, be careful not to remove any of the vinyl with the masking.

**After you have applied the decal, to enhance the durability of the chart you may want to apply a clear coat wood sealer to the entire surface.  Using a spray on sealer is the best option but carefully brushing it on works well also.

The wood can be written on with a small permanent  marker.
Enjoy the your new growth chart!

Adding the metric option:

If creating the standard/metric combination chart, follow the same directions for the metric side.
